Zines are an art and literary publication form that embody DIY ideals of "using what you have" to express your passion. The Do-It-Yourself (DIY) ethic began with the punk movement but has since then spread beyond that to the graffiti, Hip-Hop, Contemporary Art, and fashion scenes to name a few. This two part workshop on the art form of zine-making (also known as fanzines, artzines) is for high school level students. We will spin through multiple examples of artists' zines, discussing the creative ways in which these publications have impacted underground cultures and history. Instruction on techniques for construction and how to fabricate exciting, personalized layouts will be covered.

Part 2 of the workshop the students will be asked to bring more personal content taken from life for their zines (researched material, their own writings, own photographs, etc.). We will create the cover, inside, and binding of a deep and rich zine that embodies elements of what each student loves! A photocopy machine shall be available to alter sizes of images if needed. The end result will be a finished booklet that can be a one-of-a-kind or result in multiples to share!
