In contemporary art today, "New Abstraction" is a prevalent idea sculptors are wrestling with. This idea can be seen in the works of many of the artists in the de la Cruz collection such as, Rachel Harrison, Iza Genzken, Aaron Curry and Sterling Ruby. In this workshop artists Cristina Lei-Rodriguez and Shane Aslan Selzer will discuss how artists use abstraction in their art process and methods of production. Through lectures, experiencing the works in person and a hands on art making project, students will learn how to approach contemporary sculpture when they see it, and how to apply these concepts to their own art making.
Hands on project:
Image into Object into Image. Representing objects in clay, transforming
one object into another through a series of 6 sculptures. (Assignment
will be explained in depth during class, the final result will be to
animate the objects as they transform. This will become a collaborative effort).
Additive techniques, emphasis on rendering, and conceptualizing abstraction.
