SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2010 AT 7 PM VIEW THREE MAJOR WORKS BY RENOWNED Water seeds, 1989 was commissioned for the de la Cruz residence in Key Biscayne. This triptych celebrates the meeting of water, corals and sand as a metaphor for the re-generative cycle of the universe. Sea Bitch Born Deep, 1986 presents surreal images of an underwater ballet where imagery is saturated with Afro-Caribbean symbols. The legs of the ballerina, the central figure in this composition, turn into daggers to ward off evil spirits. In Witness, 1990, Alfonzo faces his own mortality. This painting is part of his last series of 'Black Paintings' exhibited at the Bass Museum of Art the year before he died. |
