Bas' characters belong to a decadent era when realism was the dominant aesthetic. His melancholic and romantic young men resemble the artist himself. They echo fin-de-siecle characters of plays and novels by Oscar Wilde, Rimbaud and Rilke. The young men in Bas' work live in a homoerotic fantasy world, as they try to escape Victorian prejudice. In Fitting In, 2004, a sleepy young man mimics nature by imitating flamingos standing on one leg.

Donachie's intimate portraits are consistent with the artist's interest in countercultures and the legacy of early modernist women. In this group of works, the artist pays tribute to historical figures including bohemian actresses, writers and poets. Her portraits recognize the individual magnetism of heroines who were pioneers of the female revolution.

Using literature, film and found images, both artists continuously analyze historical and traditional ideas and movements. Their work creates narratives of individual utopias.
